The main activity of LaboRA is the determination of the radioactive content in environmental samples, such as water, air, soil, sediments and food.

The main tests carried out by the laboratory are as follows:

  • Gross alpha activity per proportional counter
  • Gross beta activity per proportional counter
  • Beta activity rest by proportional counter
  • Natural gamma isotopes activity (e.g. 7Be, 40K, 208Tl, 210Pb, 212Pb, 214Bi and 214Pb) by gamma spectrometry
  • Artificial gamma isotopes activity (e.g. 51Cr, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co, 59Fe, 65Zn, 95Nb, 95Zr, 103Ru, 106Ru, 131I, 134Cs, 137Cs, 140Ba, 140La, and 144Ce) by gamma spectrometry
  • Strontium isotopes activity (89Sr and 90Sr) per proportional counter
  • Uranium isotope activity (234U, 235U and 238U) by alpha spectrometry
  • Plutonium isotopes (238Pu and 239+240Pu), thorium (228Th, 230Th and 232Th) and americium (241Am) activity by alpha spectrometry
  • Tritium by liquid scintillation detector
  • In situ actions: Gamma emitter activity by gamma spectrometry and exposure dose rate levels
