Function and objectives
The Laboratory of Environmental Radioactivity – LaboRA – was created in 2011, as a scientific-technical structure of the Universitat de les Illes Balears. It arises from the collaboration between the Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics (Dept. Physics) and Analytical, Automation and Environment Chemistry (Dept. Chemistry) that, since 1992, have carried out joint tasks in the field of radioactivity measurement in environmental samples.
Among our objectives, highlight:
- Carry out environmental radioactivity monitoring plans.
- Analyze samples supplied by socio-economic agents to determine their radioactive content (supply control, export, etc.).
- Contribute to the advancement of knowledge of existing radioactivity in the environment, participating in research projects or agreements with companies.
- Develop automated radiochemical separation methods specially designed to analyze environmental samples with low activities.
